Direct restorations is another term for dental fillings.

A restoration is usually required if there is a cavity present or a portion of a tooth is broken, in which case the affected area is cleaned and replaced to the original shape using the filling material.

We don’t use amalgam any longer, all our filling materials are tooth coloured resin or glass-based materials known as composites or glass ionomers respectively.

Gone are the days of unsightly metal fillings. Other than restoring the cavity to a tooth shape and matching colour making it hardly noticeable, tooth coloured fillings require less tooth removal and preparation as they are bonded to the tooth surface.

It is good to bear in mind that restorations do not offer structural support to the tooth and in cases where a large ratio of the tooth needs to be restored, it is often better to consider a crown as a crown lends the tooth the structural support it needs so it is not vulnerable to breaking down under functional load.

Composite resins can be used to solve a number of cosmetic issues, including discolorations, uneven gaps and other issues . Have a look at ‘Direct Bondings’ to see how you can create an affordable smile makeover.
